Here’s a basic Mac text editing trick; probably everyone knows it.
If you accidentally press command-up (⌘↑) or command-down. (⌘↓) and are taken to the top or bottom of a long ream of text, undo (⌘Z) and then redo (⇧⌘Z).
Instapaper 3.0.1
What’s New in Version 3.0.1
Added option to hide the Browse Bar (the “Friends, Editors, Web” buttons).
Well that was very fast.
I really didn’t want to publish what I wrote about the Instapaper 3.0 update, and now I don’t have to. I wrote about visual clutter, advertisements, task-centric user interfaces, information hierarchies, unbalanced trees and the...
FaceTime goes beyond faces
FaceTime was a great name when it came out with the iPhone 4. It was really all about seeing faces.
With the new MacBook Pros and the iPad 2, FaceTime shows more than just faces. Nevertheless, it’s still a catchy name.
I find video conversations such as FaceTime lacking in ‘connectedness’ — certainly when done on a computer. I haven’t had the chance to do an iPhone to iPhone call, so...
What is the plural of GPS? →
iRosetta
As far as I know, nobody has built a second global positioning system: there’s only one. The update mentioning “GPS receiver” probably solves most problems.
Spotted!
Instapaper Free not in the App Store.
Looks like another sales experiment. I actually wanted to download to see what the free version is like.
Keyboard suggestions in iOS 4.3
Apple has silently improved the keyboard auto-correction in iOS 4.3. When you miss the space bar and hit a bottom row key instead, the system favours suggesting the two separate words. This is brilliant.
For an comprehensive list of other changes in iOS 4.3, see Rene Ritchie’s post at TiPb. (Via Daring Fireball)
Uh oh, Safari can’t connect to the Extensions Gallery.
I think Safari 5 is a little buggy regarding connecting to servers, particularly if the server does something unusual. See when I was told Mac OS X can not handle HTTP back in January.
iPhone 3G not compatible with iOS 4.3
Apple says: “iOS 4.3 is compatible with these devices:”
The iPhone 3G is finished. No more updates. It’s sad that a device which was sold as new two-and-a-half years ago is no longer being improved. On the other hand, leaving behind old hardware must contribute significantly to enabling Apple to iterate on and improve iOS so rapidly.
Instacast →
Patrick Rhone at Minimal Mac:
Instacast is a new podcast listening app for iOS that is fast, elegant, and has all of the features that are missing from the functionality built into the iPod app. It is really well done. You can subscribe, download, and stream podcasts while on the go over WiFi or 3G. Browse show notes. It supports playing in the background. And the player design itself is clean....
Apple’s Events page →
Go to Apple’s events page and watch today’s event without spoilers. Avoid live blogs and see the show first hand. That’s my plan for later on this evening.
Notifications
Before continuing, please see Sebastiaan de With’s Getting Notified, where he looks at notifications in WebOS, Android and iOS.
Types of notifications
A notification is a message presented to the user, often with an optional action. There is a difference between notifications from foreground applications and background notifications.
