Question Mark in Facebook Interface
I spotted this interesting detail in the Facebook web interface:
Why the question mark on the delete button? I can see the reasoning: it reassures you the button is not going to immediately delete the list. (A confirmation dialogue box is presented.)
The Mac interface guidelines would put an ellipsis (…) on the end of all these buttons as these all bring up a dialogue box. Not that Facebook...
Minimal Mac: What's in your Simplenote? →
Patrick Rhone is asking on Minimal Mac: What’s in your Simplenote? I give Notational Velocity and Simplenote equal credit for storing my notes.
I make notes on all sorts of things. One important exception is tasks to do. These tend to go on my whiteboard.
Notes are sorted by modification date. Here are a few things from the top of the list:
Things I have done today. Nothing deep here: just a...
Tumblr Theme
I’ve been looking over my Tumblr theme this evening. It does not look much different, but I took out a lot of redundant CSS and made a few modifications here and there. The post titles still don’t look right on iPhone.
I am learning how this stuff works as I go along.
iOS 4 Feature Removal: iTunes Background Audio
Grumble:
I just discovered that the iTunes app doesn’t play audio in the background under iOS 4 on iPhone 3G. So beyond not all features being available on weaker hardware, some features are removed compared to version three of system.
The only podcast progressive download option available seems to be Safari. I’ll take this chance to comment that Safari’s audio playing...
Is Microsoft Office really the right tool?
Interesting statistic quoted by Charles Jade on TheAppleBlog:
Mac Office is on about 70 percent of Macs
If true, I find this very worrying. I do not believe Office is the best tool for the job for so many people.
(The article on TheAppleBlog is not worth reading.)

One Thing Well: Go SSD →
Just two points from a list of benefits of an SSD:
Applications launch instantaneously. Even iPhoto.
No spinning beach balls, ever.
Wow! I have the same vintage MacBook Pro (2007). I might have to buy one of these. (Shame the price in sterling equals the price in dollars though.)

Vero Pepperrell, who’s on the team making Alfred:
Sometimes, I admit, Mac users (myself included) love our gadgetry and possibly annoy those who don’t feel so strongly about their computer setup.
Well put. I know that feeling.
I caught a wasp dismembering and beheading a fly. I love the way the wing jumps towards the camera when torn off.
32 seconds
Shot with a Canon Digital Ixus 80 IS
Quality reduced for web
No audio (removed)
Apologies for not setting the camera to macro focus and moving it right close. That might have disturbed the wasp.
Safari Knows About Its Open Pages
I noticed a thoughtful touch in Safari recently (it is probably new in Safari 5).
If Safari receives a request to open a web page that is already open in a window, it shows the window and reloads the page. I would improve this by just showing the window and not reloading, but nevertheless this is much better than opening another window containing a duplicate of the page.
Actually, this only...
NYT Article on Femtocells →
Even though the calls would be offloaded to an Internet service provider, AT&T customers would be charged for the minutes of phone service in their existing wireless plans unless they pay an extra $20 a month for unlimited calling.
Ridiculous.
There also are ways to connect mobile phones to Wi-Fi hot spots, but that requires people to download software, like Skype, to route the calls...
